10 Ways to Keep Your Class Interesting

Have you ever been in the middle of teaching a class, glanced at your students, and caught them staring into space? Just when you think youve created the perfect lesson plan or engaging activity, you may find that your students are unfocused and out to lunch. Yet its essential that you find ways to keep your classes interesting so your students can absorb and retain the information that you present. For decades, educators have been trying new teaching strategies to keep their students on their toes and get them excited about learning. Although some strategies have failed, others have been found to be quite effective. Explore 10 teacher-tested ways to keep your class interesting so your students will stay engaged all the time. 1. Incorporate Mystery Into Your Lessons Learning may be the most fun for your students when they dont know what to expect. Try to incorporate a sense of surprise and mystery into your lessons. When youre about to unveil a new lesson, give students a new clue each day up until the last day before the start of the lesson. This is a fun way to make your lesson mysterious, and you may find that your students are actually looking forward to finding out what theyll be learning about next. 2. Dont Repeat Classroom Material Its appropriate and essential to review classroom material, but try not to repeat it verbatim because this can make it less interesting for students. The next time you need to review material, try playing a review game during which you present the information in a way thats different from the first time you taught the students. The 3-2-1 strategy is a fun way to review and not repeat material. For this activity, students draw a pyramid in their notebooks and write down three things they learned, two things they thought were interesting, and one question they still have. 3. Create Classroom Games Whether youre 5 or 25, playing a game can be fun. Games are also a great way to keep lessons interesting. If your students need to remember their spelling words, conduct a spelling bee—a contest in which participants are eliminated when they misspell a word. Or if the students need to practice math, have a math bee, which is similar to a spelling bee, but with math problems or facts instead of spelling words. Games make learning fun, and games in class are a prescription for happy kids. 4. Give Your Students Choices One strategy that teachers have found to be effective is offering their students the ability to make their own choices when it comes to learning. Choice can be a powerful motivator because it helps to foster student interest and independence. The next time youre planning an activity, try making a choice board. Print out a tic-tac-toe board and write down nine different tasks for students to complete. The goal is for each student to choose three tasks in a row. 5. Use Technology Technology is a great way to keep your lessons interesting. Children love electronics, so try incorporating it into your overall teaching strategy. Instead of standing in front of the room and lecturing, try using a Smartboard interactive display. Expand your cooperative learning activity lessons by connecting to a classroom in another city or country via videoconferencing. Use technology in a variety of ways, and youll see the interest level in your classroom increase by leaps and bounds. 6. Dont Take Teaching so Seriously Being an effective teacher is an important job, but that doesnt mean that you have to remain serious in class at all times. Try to loosen up a bit and acknowledge that your students may have different interests and learning styles than your own. Its OK to laugh at yourself at times and to have some fun. You may find that your students are more interested when youre a little more relaxed. 7. Make Your Lessons Interactive In a traditional classroom, the teacher stands in front of the room and lectures to the students as the students listen and take notes. Unfortunately, this is not the most effective way to hold students interest. Make learning interactive by creating hands-on lessons that involve students every step of the way. Try using the Jigsaw cooperative learning activity in which each student is responsible for his or her own part of a group activity. Or try a hands-on science experiment. When you involve students and make your lessons interactive, your class becomes more interesting. 8. Relate Material to Your Students Lives Try to create a real-world connection to what your students are learning. This will give them a better understanding of why they need to learn what youre teaching. If theyre constantly asking you why they need to learn something and youre always answering with â€Å"because,† you will soon lose credibility. Instead, try giving them a real answer such as, Youre learning about money because in the real world, youll need to know how to buy food and pay your bills. By giving a straightforward answer, youre helping them make a connection between what theyre learning in class and how theyll use this information in the future. 9. Flip Your Lessons The flipped classroom has been gaining in popularity since the term flipped entered the broader education world in 2012. When it was first presented, the idea that students could learn new information at home and then come to school and use class time for critical thinking activities and reinforcement of concepts was unique. However, many teachers are using this strategy and achieving positive results. Students in a flipped classroom are able to work at their own pace (which is great for differentiated learning) and engage with their peers in a more interactive, meaningful way when theyre in the classroom. Try using the flipped teaching strategy for your next lesson and observe the depth of your students engagement. 10. Think Outside the Box Lesson plans dont have to include worksheets or lectures during which students sit and take notes time and again. Try thinking outside the box and plan a lesson thats completely out of the ordinary. Invite a guest speaker, go on a field trip, or take learning outdoors. When you try something new and different, theres a good chance that your students will respond positively. When planning a lesson, try collaborating with another teacher or taking your students on a virtual field trip. Learning that engages students is the most effective. Your students will find it more interesting to learn when you present the material to them in a variety of creative ways.

Animal Farm Lord Of The Flies Essay George Orwell wrote Animal Farm. It was about a group of animals rebelling against the humans and eventually the pigs and take over. Napoleon, one of the pigs, becomes the leader. William Golding wrote Lord of the Flies. It was about a group of boys stranded on an island. Ralph becomes the leader and they try hard to survive until someone finds them. The plot, the characters, the symbols, as well as the reason for writing the two stories are very similar, but there are also some differences. There was a caste system that developed as the two stories go on. In Animal Farm there were two leaders, Napoleon and Snowball. Both of them were pigs. In their society the pigs were the smartest and were first on the caste system. In Lord of the Flies there was one chief and it was Ralph. Ralph then appointed Jack to be the leader of the hunters. On the island the biguns, the big ones, were first on the caste system and the littluns, the little ones, were next. In Animal Farm, at the beginning, Old Major had a dream. He dreamed that the animals would take over the world and the animals would have whatever they wanted. In Lord of the Flies, at first, the island was like paradise and all they were going to do was have fun until the adults go and rescue them. However, in both stories, they ended up in disaster. The pigs took control and the other animals were in worst condition than they were in when the humans were in control. The boys ended up disagreeing and killing each other. In both stories only certain people worked, but the characters that worked were different. In Animal Farm it was the animals at the bottom of the caste system that worked and harvested whereas in Lord of the Flies it was the biguns, the people at the top of caste system, that worked and got food. There was a difference in the amount of food that the animals and the boys got. The animals in Animal Farm were given only enough food to survive by the humans, Mr. and Mrs. Jones. After the rebellion the pigs got more food, but the other animals got the same amount or even less than before. In Lord of the Flies the biguns and the littluns got as much food as they wanted. In Animal Farm the animals built a windmill to try to generate electricity so that the stalls could warm in the winter. The windmill was built many times and destroyed many times by Snowball as it was said or in battles. When it was finally built and was not destroyed, it was used for milling corn, not for generating electricity. In Lord of the Flies everyone was suppose to build shelters for sleeping and so that they can be able to hide from storms. At first everyone did, then the littluns got bored and went off to  eat and play. Ralph and Simon were left to build the rest of the shelters, which kept on falling down. The windmill and shelters were also symbols in both stories. The windmill represented, to the animals, a better life to which they strive for, but as the windmill was destroyed so was their dream. The shelters were a symbol for civilization. Like the windmill the shelters kept falling, which said that civilization would eventually break down. In both stories the characters killed animals. In Animal Farm Napoleon and his dogs killed any animals that went against him. He also killed any animal that made confessions of having somehow communicated with Snowball. Napoleon uses it as an excuse to keep the animals working. In Lord for the Flies the littluns are afraid of the beast. When Jack, Ralph, and Roger went and saw the beast, which is a parachute and a man, the biguns also got scared. Like Napoleon, Jack uses it to make the littluns believe he will help them and gains their trust, which will make them go to his tribe, by telling them that he and his hunters would hunt it. In Animal Farm Napoleon didnt like Snowball and sent his dogs to kill Snowball. It was never said in the story whether Snowball died or not. In Lord of the Flies Jack decided to start his own tribe and when Ralph went to get Piggys specs, that Jack had stole, Jack stabs Ralph, but Ralph survives. In Animal Farm the pigs become humans by the end. They start to wear clothes, sleep in beds, and drink alcohol. When they invite humans to the farm and play card with them, the rest of the animals saw everyone though a window. The animals couldnt tell whether the pigs were pigs or humans. In Lord of the Flies most of the boys become savages. They start to wear paint, steal from each other, and kill each other. Both stories were criticizing a historical philosophy. Animal Farm was written to criticize Marxism and Russian Revolution led by Stalin. Marx said the working class had to overthrow the ruling class in order to have a better life. That was exactly what happened in the Russian Revolution. It did not provide the working class with a better life. Stalin took over and he became the ruling class. George Orwell shows in Animal Farm that Marx was wrong. He believes if a revolution took place, then someone else would take control. For example in Animal Farm the pigs took over. Lord of the Flies was written to criticize Rosseaus philosophy. He said that society causes a person to be evil and he believed that if a child was separated from the society and given freedom, then that child would be truly happy and  the evil would no longer be exist. William Golding demonstrates in Lord of the Flies that Rosseau is wrong. He believes that evil is in an individual and it has nothing to do with society. He shows in the story that evil comes from an individual and not from the society by putting the little boys on an island. After a while the boys turn on each other and there is corruption. Both stories have leaders and a caste system. Both has a hopeful beginning and has a disastrous ending. The pigs killed animals and so did the boys. They both had enemies. In the end one leader turns and kills on the other. The pigs become humans and the little boys become savages. The two stories were also criticizing someones philosophy. In Animal Farm the characters of lower class worked, whereas in Lord of the Flies characters of higher class worked. The animals had insufficient food, unlike the boys who had an abundance of food. Animal Farm and Lord of the Flies have many similarities, but only a couple of little differences.

Confucius and Confucianism LIFE OF CONFUCIUS Confucius was believed to have been born in 551 BC., in the state of Lu, known today as the Shandong province. His parents, who died while he was a child, named him Kong Qui. Confucius was derived from the Latin word Kongfuzi which means Great Master Kong. Confucius was the most influential and respected philosopher in Chinese history. His ideas were the single strongest influence on Chinese society from around 100 BC. to the AD. 1900's. The Chinese government made his ideas the official state philosophy and many nearby countries honored his beliefs. Confucius wanted to gain the position as an adviser to a wise ruler, but he failed. He hoped to do this in order to be able to employ his ideas for reforming society. If it wasn't for the disciples of Confucius his teachings would have never been spread around China, and he would have never been made known. His teachings were never written down by him, but his conversations and sayings were written down by his disciples in the analects. CONFUCIANISM Confucianism was the single most important thing in Chinese life. It affected everything in China; education, government, and attitudes toward behavior in public and private life. Confucianism is not a religion, but it is more a philosophy and a guide to morality and good government. At the time Confucius was born, China was in a conezt state of war, and rapid political change altered the structure of Chinese society so much that people no longer respected the established behavioral guidelines. Confucius stated that the ideal person was one of good moral character. The ideal person was also truly reverent in worship and sincerely respected his father and his ruler. He was expected to think for himself, guided by definite rules of conduct. As Confucius said, he was expected to take "as much trouble to discover what was right as lesser men take to discover what will pay". Confucius believed that this type of behavior by rulers had a greater effect on the people than did laws or codes of punishment. So when these types of people were rulers, their moral example would inspire the people to lead good lives. Confucius died sometime around 479 B.C., and his philosophy was not very well known. If it weren't for his disciples his ideas would probably still be unknown. Confucius never wrote anything down himself; his disciples wrote all of his sayings down in a collection of books called the Analects. These contain all that modern day man knows about Confucius. There existed two important Confucian philosophers-Mencius (390-305 BC) and Xunzi (mid 200's B.C.). They held beliefs similar to Confucius but they were somewhat different. Mencius's viewpoint was that people were born good, and that they had to "preserve the natural compassion of the heart". Xunzi opposed this by saying that people could be good and live peacefully only if their minds were shaped by education and conduct. Both of these ideas parallel Confucius', in that they both state that people can be good. Confucianism was concerned primarily with the needs of society, and unlike Buddhism and Taoism, not the ability for a person to live in harmony with nature. Beginning in the 200's B.C. Buddhism and Taoism began to affect and reshape the ezdards of Confucianism, and things such as nature came into play. Around A.D. 200 to 600, there was a rapid decline in the Confucian Beliefs in China. This was partly because Confucianism now had to compete with Buddhism and Taoism, which were developed around this time. These religions were to Confucianism as night is to day, in other words, they were exact opposites. Buddhism and Taoism were largely concerned with the meaning of suffering and death, while Confucianism largely ignored these. The revival of Confucianism began around the 600's and was fully revived by the 700's. In the 1100's, there was a movement lead by Zhu-Xi called the Neo-Confucianism movement. He developed a branch of this movement known as the rational-wing, it dealt with the study of Li, the relationship between humans and nature. Land Biomes - Tropical Rainforests Biomes Biomes are the worlds major habitats. These habitats are identified by the vegetation and animals that populate them. The location of each land biome is determined by the regional climate. Tropical Rain Forests Tropical rainforests are characterized by dense vegetation, seasonally warm temperatures, and abundant rainfall. The animals that dwell here depend on trees for housing and food. Climate Tropical rain forests are very hot and wet. They can average between 6 and 30 feet of precipitation per year. The average temperature is fairly constant ranging from about 77 to 88 degrees Fahrenheit. Location Tropical rain forests are typically located in areas of the world that are near the equator. Locations include: Africa - Zaire basin and MadagascarCentral America - Amazon River BasinHawaiiWest IndiaSoutheast AsiaAustralia Vegetation A great variety of plants can be found in tropical rain forests. Enormous trees as tall as 150 feet tall form an umbrella canopy over the forest that blocks out the sunlight for plants in the lower canopy and forest floor. Some examples of rainforest plants include: kapok trees, palm trees, strangler fig trees, banana trees, orange trees, ferns, and orchids. Wildlife Tropical rain forests are home to the majority of plant and animal species in the world. Wildlife in the tropical rain forest is very diverse. Animals include a variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects. Examples are: monkeys, gorillas, jaguars, anteaters, lemurs, snakes, bats, frogs, butterflies, and ants. Rain forest creatures have characteristics such as bright colors, distinctive markings, and grasping appendages. These traits help the animals adapt to life in the rain forest.

Some of these factors are negative while others are positive in nature. The purpose of this research study is to determine whether the different learning styles have an impact on the career choice of an individual. The term learning style has had many definitions and one of them is the process of organizing facts and coming into touch with the reality. Career preference, on the other hand, may be defined as the choice of occupation necessary for one to make a living. The learning style, in this case, is the independent variable whereas the career preference is the dependent variable. The problem under investigation, in this case, is the effect of inadequate knowledge in learning styles on career preference. The purpose or objective of the study is important in that it gives a sense of direction to the researcher. The purpose of this study will be to determine whether there is a correlation between learning styles and the choice of occupation or career an individual selects. A hypothesis is important in any form of research and assists the researcher in sticking to the topic under investigation. The hypothesis of the study, in this case, is: there is a correlation between the learning styles and career choice of an individual. The significance of this study would be to assist tutors in different academic institutions to come up with the best strategies in assisting students in learning. It would also assist in assisting tutors to determine the best learning styles to be adopted for students on different career paths. This would enhance the education system and assist in ensuring that students acquire education in the most effective and efficient way possible. On the other hand, the research would ensure that the needs of the students are fully catered for in that they would feel comfortable learning through.
